Q. Why are there so many people trying to do crime scene - biohazard cleaning?
A. Many reasons. The first is some companies like BIOPRO, LLC truly enjoy helping people. Unfortunately there are those who price gouge families at their most vulnerable time. There have been many articles written about the huge hourly rates and money that can be made. This is not the norm and, in reality, after you pay wages, insurance, rent, PPE, expenses, etc., your profit margin is not near the money some companies claim.
Q. I needed a company to respond to an incident at our
factory. I went online and found a few large National companies. These companies appeared well qualified and in almost every major city.
A. The fact is the majority have great web site designers, period! Great website, great advertising and good public relations. Most of these companies don't even have one ABRA certified technician cleaner on staff or even on call! They have a call list of companies in different areas. When your call comes in, they start contacting companies on their list. Most likely they really don't know who they are calling. Most have never met anyone from the company and don't know if they are qualified or if they have done one or one thousand calls. Other companies may have some employees in satellite locations, but few of those are actually full time. Most have regular jobs and do this job on the side. There are many problems with this system. First, anyone can say anything about experience, there is seldom a way to verify it. Second, it could cost you double for the service. The companies you hire will usually double the fee they charge you. Their normal amount for the responding company and then insert their referral into these charges. I saw an article that said one company had 900 employees worldwide, 900 business contact worldwide would be more like it!
Q. How do some of these self proclaimed national companies train their employees?
A. If they do any training it may consist of a twenty minute Occupational Safety & Health Administration Bloodborne pathogen tape sent home for review.
Q. Most companies don't give an address or they have a P.O. Box but no actual address, why?
A. The majority of these companies operate out of their homes, garage, apartments, storage facility, etc. Their vehicles are usually unreliable. The same vehicle they use to transport contaminated biohazard waste can be the same ones they use to transport their family and children.
Q. What is the normal experience level of biohazard cleaners I see on the internet?
A. Normally they have minimal experience. Most of these people have other regular full time jobs. When you call for help, you hope you get a phone call back within a few hours. When they respond its usually after their "day job". I know of one cleaner who had fourteen jobs in fourteen years before taking up crime scene cleaning! Another one power washes and does epoxy floor coating as a full time job. A lot of carpet cleaning companies and restoration companies are now getting into the business; This is one way to keep their employees busy during down time. I even found one company who cleans up after weddings and now they have added crime scene clean up to their resume. Very few of these companies have the necessary training or experience needed.
Q. I was considering biohazard cleaning as a profession and considered buying a franchise.
A. Almost any major city has multiple companies already operating; ten years ago would have been a much different story. The Phoenix area alone has over 62 companies operating in one form or another. This isn't carpet cleaning where everyone needs this service every few years. In fact biohazard cleaning is a very specialized profession where you may have multiple calls in one day and then none for three weeks. The smaller the city the less the calls. Do your research first.
